The University of Mumbai (previously known as the University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and most prestigious university in India. It was established in 1857 as a result of "Wood's Educational Office", and is one of the first three universities in India. As a subsequence of the change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the University has changed from "University of Bombay" to "University of Mumbai", video notification issued by the Govt of Maharashtra and published in the Gazette of the Government on September 4, 1996. The University received the status of 5 stars in 2001 and the status of grade "A" in April 2012 by the National Council for Evaluation and Accreditation (NAAC).
